THE STEEL YARD (http://www.thesteelyard.org)

Statement:

Providence, RI --- People Interested in Participatory Sculpture (PIPS) is pleased to announce its third annual Provflux, a weekend-long event dedicated to artistic and social investigations in psychogeography. Part festival and part conference, it brings together visual, performance, and new media artists, along with writers, urban adventurers and the general public. Events will take place throughout Providence to explore the physical and psychological landscape of the city. Provflux 2006 will be held concurrent with the Conference for New Urbanism (www.cnuxiv.org).

PIPS is currently accepting proposals for experimental projects in contemporary urban exploration and public art. The projects can take any form, providing it engages notions of urban space and the public's interaction with it. Interventions, actions, urban installations, presentations, and any other projects of this nature will all be considered. All disciplines are encouraged to submit material.

This year, we are asking for only action-oriented work. We have decided not to host a gallery show full of past events' documentation, but instead to host performances, interventions, games, discussions, and any other events that should be presented in the urban sphere.

We're serious about getting out of the gallery and putting the show back in the streets where it belongs.

More information can be found at http://www.pipsworks.com/provflux2006/provflux2006.html

STEREOPHONIC SOUNDSCAPE

Call for Works

The Digital Art Weeks of ETH Zurich and the Stereolith Speaker System Company,
Switzerland, would like to invite audio artists to submit soundscape works.
Each work must be in stereo and not more than 10 minutes in length. The works
will be chosen on their ability to "evoke" the presence of things or beings
in space and to the extent in which the work "immerses" the listener into
a completely imaginary sonic environment.

Stereolith is an innovative reproduction system for the re-creation of recordings
made to playback in stereo. Unlike traditional loudspeaker configurations,
the Stereolith is a single construction in which both the "left" and the
"right" channels have been incorporated. In this way, the system can be installed
at any point within the listening space and allows the listener to experience
a true stereo effect of each work from any point within the space as if it
was a live event.

Please submit all works in .aiff format on a CD. Please include the title
of the work, a short description of it no more than 100 words)and a short
biography of the author of the work (no more than 50 words). Selected works
will be presented on the Stereolith Systems over a period of 4 days from
the 12th to the 15th of July 2006 in the VisDome of ETH Zurich in conjunction
with the exhibition Zeitschnitt which will include projected works from various
artists throughout Europe. Information about each audio artist, soundscape
work and the time it can be heard will be announced in the events program.

Deadline: Friday, 14th April 2006.
Notification of acceptance of proposals will be sent out on or before Friday,
5th May 2006.

CHINA GATES

Call for Participation
Mobile Music Performance
Zurich, Switzerland

The Digital Art Weeks 2006, organized by members of the Computer Science Department of the ETH Zurich, is looking for up to twelve persons who are interested in contemporary music and art who would be interested in participating on a voluntary basis for the performance of a new Mobil-Music work under the direction of Sound Artist, Art Clay using GPS and mobile computer technologies.

Aesthetically, the work China Gates for tuned gongs and Wrist Conductor is rooted in works for open public space and belongs to a series of works, which celebrate the use of innovative mobile technologies to explore public space and audience. The work is technically based on possibilities of synchronizing a group of performers using the clock pulse emitted by satellites. The GPS Wrist Conductor signals each player when to hit the gong. An intense rippling effect results as the players gradually move around the park and the music of the gongs shift back and fourth from intense chords to exotic melodies.

The preparation for the event will take place in the form of a mini-workshop on mobile music and sound in open space.

Persons interested in participating are asked to apply by sending a message to the below stated email address. Please include a short biography (50 words) telling us about yourself and why you would you like to participate. Selected players will receive a festival pass for all Digital Art Weeks 06 events.

Wake Up Call, a public art project utilizing telephony as it's exhibition medium, is currently seeking submissions. Exhibition rus through Jan '07, deadline for submissions is May 1st '06.

The piece is loosely based on a hotel wake up call service; other inspirations for the piece include robotic automatic dialing and the cultural signal to noise ratio it has produced. It is not created and subsequently distributed (the traditional mode) but rather created via its distribution, manifested in its use by the public. Wake Up call is interactive and audience generated in that users select an individual artistic work, schedule the call (that day or up to a year in advance), and provide their own anonymous text message. Software agents store this information and complete the process through automated dialing and text to speech computer conversion. The work combines the choices of the audience, the message of the audience, digital text to speech technology, and audio pieces by participating artists. The final landscape of the art work is drawn symbiotically through the cooperation of artists, art piece, and the audience.

Wake Up Call is currently accepting submissions of any art work able to be transmitted through telephony. All genres will be considered; no thematic, content based or stylistic requirements need be met though the works will undergo a juried process. For example, already accepted to the site are spoken word pieces, classical cello, improvisational jazz, and experimental/noise sound art works. Please see the website for technical specifications:
