FRANKLIN FURNACE OPEN CALL TO ALL ARTISTS

THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART 2006 and THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2006
www.franklinfurnace.org/grants/grants.html
THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART 2006
Supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, Franklin Furnace awards grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to emerging performance artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Artists from all areas of the world are invited to apply.
THE FUTURE OF THE PRESENT 2006
Franklin Furnace awards artists an honorarium and offers its resources to facilitate the creation of "live art on the Internet," works which engage the Internet as an art medium and/or venue. Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply.
Franklin Furnace has no curator; each year a new panel of artists reviews all proposals. We believe that this peer panel system allows all kinds of artists from all over the world an equal shot at presenting their work. All applicants are automatically considered for both categories of awards. Every year the panel changes, as the definitions of "emerging artist," "performance art" and "live art on the Internet" change, so if at first you don't succeed, try again.
Since its inception in 1985 THE FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND FOR PERFORMANCE ART has boosted the careers of such emerging artists as Tanya Barfield, Patty Chang, Papo Colo, Brody Condon, Karen Finley, John Fleck, Murray Hill, Holly Hughes, Mouchette, Pamela Sneed, Jack Waters, Cathy Weis, and Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga.

(either MAC or PC format) cued or burned to show the panel two to five minutes of your strongest work or work that is relevant to your proposal. If you submit a URL, it is recommended that you supply a navigation guide to all the sections of the website you would like us to visit. If you do not specify which fund you are applying for, you will automatically be evaluated for both funds.
3. You MUST include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of materials, or indicate that you will pick up your packet at our office. Please make sure that the envelope is big enough for your materials and that it has enough postage.
4. Contact Info: Name, Mailing Address, Phone number/Fax number, Email/WWW.

Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto
UNIDEE in Residence International Program

A international residence program open to students and graduates of various university faculties, to artists and to professionals from any country in the world.
http://unidee.cittadellarte.it/about.htm
The growing interest in researching and developing ideas in all sectors of society is not interpreted by UNIDEE in generic terms but as the need for a creative contribution to transformation in all areas of activity. UNIDEE offers all the course participants an experience unlike anything offered in any other university or academic program. Work is grounded in an imaginative and research-oriented practice that operates within each discipline and is directed towards the responsible transformation of society.
UNIDEE residents live and work on the Cittadellarte site, a pleasing example of industrial archaeology, and participate in courses, workshops, public meetings and exhibitions.
The UNIDEE programs are directed by Michelangelo Pistoletto.
The official language is English.
The work of the UNIDEE residents involves constant interaction with the offices of Cittadellarte, which put the program of responsible social transformation into effect through projects developed in conjunction with public and private institutions, companies, cultural bodies and economic and production structures.
The residents work individually or in groups to develop ideas and projects, working along creative lines pertinent to the following fields: Art, Communication, Ecology, Economics, Education, Work, Nutrition, Politics, Production, Science, Spirituality.
During the residency, meetings and seminars are held by experts and professors of various humanistic, scientific, economic, political, artistic and social disciplines.
All the events in the Cittadellarte program – exhibitions, conferences, performances and workshops – offer further opportunities for the residents to explore issues and develop ideas.
At the end of the residency, the ideas that have been generated are presented publicly at the UNIDEE in progress exhibition-event.
The residents are supported throughout by tutors, technicians and assistants, who coordinate the activities and the development of projects.
One whole floor of the main Cittadellarte building is available for the residents, with a meeting and seminar room, a computer room, workshops and a space that can be used for performances, screenings and talks.
The residents are guests of Cittadellarte, which has a guest house with single and double bedrooms. There is a staffed cafeteria.
At the end of the course each resident receives an attendance certificate. This will not, however, be issued if the resident has been absent for more than 20% of the entire period of the residency.
At the end of the residency, the participants automatically become part of the Manydee network, the aim of which is to enable them to continue project work with Cittadellarte. Through Manydee, the Cittadellarte offices continue to develop the program established with UNIDEE in Residence – International Program and set up new projects, offering former residents an opportunity to collaborate actively.

AsoloArtFilmFestival
International Festival of Films on Art and the Lives of Artists

Cinema - TV - Video - Videoart – Architecture - Design - Computer Art - Productions of Cinema Schools
The 2006 edition of the AsoloArtFilmFestival will be held in Asolo (Treviso) from September 30th to October 8th 2006. The festival upholds the cultural tradition established by the ‘Festival Internazionale del Film sull’Arte e di Biografie d’Artista’, embodying the same concept. Inaugurated in 1973, the former festival enjoyed great international success for over two decades, until it finally closed at the end of the 1990s. Thirty years later its inauguration and its following the progress happened in visual language, the festival has been relaunched as the “AsoloArtFilmFestival”: an international prized event centred upon a competition for cinema devoted to the arts in their myriad forms of expression.
The festival will be the scene for the Career Award “ Flavia Paulon”. The award will be given to the artist of international relevance who left a significant trace with his/her personality and art in the contemporary cultural scene of cinema and art.
The competition is distinct in six sections:
• FILMS ON ART for works devoted to the visual arts and music;
• ARTISTS’ LIVES for projects depicting, throughout a historical reconstruction and critical interpretation, personalities from the world of visual arts and music;
• FILMS ON THE ARCHITECTURE for films devoted to History, movements, protagonists, works and projects about architecture and town planning;
• DESIGN for works devoted to History, movements and protagonists in the design field;
• VIDEOART – COMPUTER ART for works utilizing electronic or computer technologies as a means of direct artistic expression
• PRODUCTIONS related to the visual arts and music, made by recognized film schools, specialized higher education institutes and universities;
Only works made after January 1st 2004 are eligible for the competition. The works must fall into one of the above 6 sections, which must be indicated on the entry form. The Selection Committee reserves the right to move a work to another section should it thinks the work would better fit in a different sector from the one the artist submitted to.
To enter the competition the following are necessary:
• An entry form with all the parts filled in;
• Two copies of the work (PAL standard) in VHS or DVD;
• A short biography and essential filmography of the film-maker(s);
• A synopsis of the work in Italian or English;
• At least two slides or JPEG images of different frames or stills of the work, with the authorization to broadcast them on television and publish them in the press, or otherwise use them to promote the festival;
• The work script either of dialogue or commentary in Italian or English;
• List of original and non-original sound tracks.
This material must be prepared and submitted by the participants, and sent in by July 30th 2006. If works arrive after that date, the postmark will be considered as proof of their having been sent in time. Should the material submitted be incomplete, the organizing committee will decide whether the work is eligible for the competition, and its decision will be final.
The materials submitted will not be returned but kept as documentation in the festival archive. One of the works copies will be part of the A.I.A.F International Mediateca , created with the purpose to make the material available for studying and consulting to both Universities, Schools and worldwide students, and also to the promotion of the festival.
A special committee will be set up to make a preliminary selection of the works submitted.
At least 30 days before the festival opening date, the film-makers or producers whose works have been chosen will be informed that they have been accepted for the competition. They must submit a copy of the master transferred to Betacam SP or DVD. If this copy is not in Italian it must be subtitled in this language. If these subtitles are missing, when required, the contestant will automatically be excluded from the competition. The copies of the chosen works must reach the organizing body of the festival before and no later than September 15th 2006, otherwise they will be excluded. These copies will not be returned but will be kept in the festival archive.

Wonders of the Prairie

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: The Theme is Glück Glück Glück
www.zeitraumexit.de
"Wunder der Prärie" stands for international, experimental, and extraordinary art projects which bring together fine and performing arts. "Wunder der Prärie" occurs in art rooms, uses and animates urban spaces and is firmly rooted in the urban life of the region Rhein-Neckar. For 6 years the arthouse zeitraum_ex!t has organised an annual festival. They started with the 9th International Performance Conference in 2000. Since 2004 the festival is named "Wunder der Prärie".
Amongst others, the following artists and groups participated: Anna Huber, Stefan Kaegi, Alastair Mc Lennan, Boris Nieslony, Lindy Annis, Gob Squad, Jaap Blonk, Théâtre du Radeau, Stan's Café, Yoko Tawada, FarADayCage, Volker Gerling, Mike Pearson.
The Theme: "Glück Glück Glück"
The German word "Glück" is a term with many meanings. Other languages have several, more differentiated terms for "Glück". In English for example, we have the terms "luck, fortune, happiness, felicity"; Italians speak of "fortuna, felicitá".
"Happiness" is generally understood as a very special, extraordinary emotion or an emotional state; its opposite is unhappiness or - as an extreme - desperation.
Personal Happiness
Feeling happy is defined as "being in accordance with oneself and the world". Everyone has to find out for herself or himself when these valuable moments of happiness have occurred or do occur.
"Happiness" (as well as "good luck") is fragile, volatile, it never lasts forever.
There is chance which helps to make somebody happy. Happiness also depends on fortune. The "lucky devil" or the "child of fortune" have inherited fortune; they succeed in everything and everywhere.
"Life is what you make of it" - we all wish to make and are to make ourselves happy. Happiness is merit.
Happiness in this World and in the Next World
Religions, too, make use of peoples' longing for happiness. When the promise of happiness is shifted to the realm of the next world then there is no reason to be at odds with a luckless life in this world.

Southern Exposure’s 2006-2007 Exhibition and Artists in Education programs will move beyond the gallery walls in order to present new forms of work in public space. Southern Exposure will temporarily relocate in the summer of 2006 so that the building that we have always called home at Project Artaud can undergo a seismic retrofit and upgrade. Southern Exposure is utilizing this unique opportunity to extend our programs into the public realm. Southern Exposure, founded in 1974, has a long history of presenting community-based projects. Through this new program, Southern Exposure has a goal of encouraging artists to work experimentally in public space, enabling artists to develop new works that could not otherwise be realized, and generating a critical dialog about emerging creative practices.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Southern Exposure will commission a series of public art projects that investigate diverse strategies for exploring and mapping public space. Artists selected through this open call will be commissioned to produce new work.

This project is informed by the legacy of the Situationists, an international artistic and political movement that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. The Situationists sought to radically redefine the role of art in society with a particular interest in everyday experiences in public space. They developed key concepts such as the dérive – the practice of drifting through urban space - and psychogeography – the study of the effects of the geographic environment on the emotions and behavior of individuals. In addition, a goal of these projects is to reconsider the Situationists’ strategies in light of new technologies such as Global Positioning devices and wireless communication, which have fundamentally transformed our ability to navigate public space.

This series will feature a range of projects that utilize strategies such as simple acts of walking and note taking, to projects that employ high-tech and technological apparatuses as a means to fuse virtual and real experiences or to disseminate geographical and historical information, to performances, actions, or events. These projects may involve the audience’s participation, enabling the public to engage in acts of urban mapping and reflect on their own experiences in public space.

Southern Exposure seeks proposals for artwork in various media including 1) artwork with a physical presence such as: installation, sculpture, or public intervention; 2) ephemeral and participatory artwork such as: performance, tour, walk, discussion, or lecture; 3) technology-based work such as new media or sound art; or 4) projects that combine the above categories. Projects will be presented between September 2006 and Spring 2007. The duration of the projects can range from a single performance to repeating events or a long-term installation. Selected artists will receive an honorarium and production budget ranging from $500 - $5,000 depending on the scope of the project. Southern Exposure will work with artists to provide support, promote their projects, and will create a publication that documents the program series after the projects have been presented. Southern Exposure will also provide a home base for artists to work, with space for information about the projects t!
o be accessible to the public.

APPLICATION & REVIEW PROCESS:

The proposals will be reviewed by several members of Southern Exposure’s Curatorial Committee. We are seeking proposals from artists who demonstrate a potential for creative growth working in the public realm, or artists who would like to extend their practice into the public realm but have yet to work this way.

Please mail or deliver your proposal package to Southern Exposure. Southern Exposure does not accept electronic submissions.

CREATIVE ASYLUM IN NEW YORK CITY
Based on the concept under exploration by Wooloo Productions in
AsylumHOME.net, which addresses the difficulties faced by asylum seekers
in Europe, AsylumNYC targets the challenge faced by artists interested in
working in the United States.

After an online application process, White Box’s gallery space will become

work/project from April 24 to April 29, 2006. Projects must actively
challenge a regime(s) of exclusion in New York by including otherwise
excluded individuals from cultural, economic or physical structures in the
City.

Once an artist’s project is selected, AsylumNYC will provide a free lawyer
to try to obtain a O- artist visa. If successful, the artist will be
awarded the opportunity to stay in New York for three years.

February 8, 2006 marks the launch of the www.AsylumNYC.com where
interested artists may apply until the April 1 deadline. To apply for
asylum, artists must be able to be present at White Box, 525 West 26th
